Soaring Above My Past With Forgiveness

The New Year always brings reflection, hope, change...  I was reading an article the other day and I saw the above quote, I have seen it many times before but it resonated with me in a way it never had before. I have talked about how important it is to forgive others, I can honestly say I have forgiven many people for the hurt and pain they inflicted on me or others I love... Yet there is one person that I have not forgiven until now, she has done more damage in my life than anyone I know, she has caused me a great deal of sadness and she continues to watch me, I know this as she accidentally follows my pages on social media.

I continued to react to her for the last couple of years, until recently I decided that honestly she isn't worth any reaction, thought or feeling. It is not my place to judge her for what she does and doesn't deserve, it's my place to forgive her and move on. She has taken up too much time and energy in my mind for the past couple of years, I realized she was getting the drama she craved, I will no longer waste another moment of my time thinking about her.  She is nothing to me... for 2016 I am forgiving her and moving on... I suggest she does the same but that will be her decision.
Saying all this, I took some time to think about that quote and how I needed to stop wishing the past was any different... I know that I had held on to that hope way too long, so long that it just depressed me. Just because something didn't work out the way it should have doesn't mean that it shouldn't have, it just means we all have our free agency and we just have to move on from decisions good or bad. Besides, the choices we all make have consequences, that is how life works. I don't want to be the girl who draws negative energy or drama, I am not that girl, nor do I ever want to be.

I want this to be the year that I soar, the year I make positive changes that take me in a direction that will bring me joy. I have a couple of ideas in mind to get me there, this was the first thing I needed to do, until I REALLY forgive her and move on, I will never get to the next level... and I WANT to get to the next level, I deserve that and honestly so does she but that will be her choice. I am going to stop wishing the past could have been different, it isn't and no amount of wishing will change it....
One day, I will have the answers to my questions but today I am putting them away and moving on and learning the art of letting go... I have talked about it in the past, even thought I was ready to do it, thought being the operative word... today I am ready... I want to feel that power of freedom, it's a gift I want to give myself... I know I am ready because it is a gift I want to give her too... I hope she accepts it.

I don't make resolutions in the New Year, I am of the mind that when I find something I want to change, I do it then... specific dates never work for me, I just have to do it... I alone hold myself back, it is a hard pill to swallow when I admit the truth, no one holds me back but me... Life is an ever learning process, sometimes incredibly hard but the truth is without those difficult challenges, we would never be able to become our best selves... I want the hard edges sanded off to soften me even if it's painful... because that is where I will soar.

  2. Thanks for sharing these amazing quotes, i love this quote about forgiveness, personally i have realized the true meaning of forgiveness when someone one's said to me that when you forgive the person who has hurt you, you are allowing god to visit him, and if i can't forget so why will god forget my sins and mistakes.
    Happy new year

  4. It is so ironic that the social media where I have met amazing people like you is also allowing people who bother you to read your powerful writing. You know something, you do not have anything to hide and your writing has touched so many of us. There is nothing that this woman can do to hurt you using your own writing because your work is as clear and see through as glass.
I wish you all the best in your attempts to forgive and letting go.

  8. Hi Launna, this is really beautiful. You have made the right choice and a beautiful one to forgive and move on. To let go and set yourself and that person free once and for all. I am so happy for you, dear. You are brave and do not allow anything or anyone to block your walk to freedom. Whatever decision that person makes its her choice and between her and her Creator. Be strong and courageous, and keep on moving ahead! Happy new year to you, Launna!

  12. Launna, I just love your blog and your honest posts so much!
"No one holds me back but me". That resonates with me today. There are so many things I want to do, so many ideas in my head and I always blame something to be the reason I can't do it now. That has to stop now because it's only me that holds me back. I have realized that lately and I'm so motivated to change that attitude completely :) Let's soar in 2016, let's make the best of us, let's be free of the past and let's make this life everything we want it to be.

The topic you're addressing here is a very difficult one for me, too. I have lost a friendship last year and even though I've been hurt very much (I'm sure she was, too) and I think that we have grown apart, we do not understand one another's way of thinking anymore, I wish we could have parted in a friendly way. I know it's for the better and I wish her all the best and all the happiness in the world. I want to take your advice and set her free, forgive her and move on finally. Thank you so much for your inspiring post!

I'm sending lots of loving hugs to you,
    Beate <3

  21. One of the most common responses to my memoir is "How did she ever forgive all those people?" Forgiveness is a lifestyle; a choice. If I choose to dwell on what someone did TO me it makes it extremely difficult. But when I choose to forgive them and realize that they only hurt themselves, I can move forward. That does not mean we forget the pain or what happened -- we just don't allow it to control our lives.

You did a beautiful job of sharing your thoughts and you will reap the benefits of your decision.

  34. Sometimes, forgiving people can be so hard, but it is definitely better to do so. Carrying around the anger and bitterness that comes from holding a grudge just isn't worth it.

I hope you have a joyous year in 2016.

  35. I really like your thoughts. I think you truly shouldn't spend too much time in the past, moving on is something many of us have to learn, because it's so important to live in the presence.

  36. Forgiveness is never really about the other person...it's for us. That being said it is a process...sometimes a back-and-forth one. But eventually it happens if we want it to, and I am glad you are in a better place.

We can't change the past...but it really does affect us in the present. that is different than living in the past. I think there are things we can change easily and some things are harder to change despite our best efforts. I guess we just have to keep trying. I hope this year opens up many channels of love for you. And me.

  37. These are all great resolutions, Launna, and I really hope that this can make you live happy and serene, but for me the point is not so much about forgive or judging others, but simly don't care more.
I mean: if somebody was very bad with you, knows it and still is not regretting or sorry, why you should forgive?
Instead I'd cut every relationship with that person and don't care a thing about his or her life and so live on happily!
Trying too hard to forgive seems to me like to spread salt on the wound, and definitely bring a considerable amount of sadness, so why should I, the victim, try so hard?
Anyway any person is different, so maybe you'r system is right for you, I hope so!
Wishing you the best for this 2016, darling!

  38. You're a brave and strong woman for taking a higher road, Launna and I know the art of forgiveness and letting go is not easy as I am trying to learn it myself. It's even harder when a person that haunts me is someone who was supposed to nurture me but I am lying if I say I have completely forgive and forget because deep down I am still a little bitter.

I know this might come across as cliche but this post is what I need to read, need to feel inside my heart...maybe I can fully and truly let it go too. I have learned to forgive myself in 2015, after being so angry towards the person I see in the mirror for more than 10 years. And this year, with all my heart and my might, I hope to forgive this other person and maybe by then, I can fully feel free from resentment.

  39. Sometimes even if you can't forgive the best thing to do is walk away and try and forget. It took me years to walk away from my own mother -- best choice I ever made. I needed to put her out of my life so that she couldn't do anymore damage. I admit -- I can't forgive but I have never regretted walking away.

  46. Hey! Wishing you a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings in the year to come.

I agree with all your statement! I know that I need to forgive someone, not for their benefit, but for my own and for my brain, and my health too. But.... forgiving someone who has wronged you, betrayed you, and who hurts you is not always easy. I can forgive them but it can be difficult to forget. It's like a mirror, once it's broken it is really hard to fix it.
Maybe I am wrong, or just stubborn, probably both. =(
