Excuses Are Just Fears

I walked away from blogging for the past couple of weeks without saying anything, I wasn't sure that I was leaving; each day I was gone I wasn't sure when I was coming back ... I didn't know what to say. I sporadically commented on a few posts here and there but I didn't spend any significant time reading. I didn't know why until yesterday and then I was so busy that I didn't have a moment to write.

You all know that I am on my journey to be healthy, which to me entails more than just eating healthy and exercising but that is what I have been focused on for the past two months. I rarely if ever went over the calorie limit I had allowed for myself and I have been exercising a lot. In the month of July and August I walked over 190 miles each of those months... Already this month I have 30 miles... yet in 9 weeks I have only lost 9 pounds. I know that it is good that I lost and that slow weight loss is better but it is very hard to handle when I know that what I eat and what I exercise should show much better numbers on the scale.

Yes, I do feel a bit better with my clothing, however; inches are not coming off as easily either. . . So, I reached out to two people and they both gave me sound advise in that I have to change how I am exercising... you see I LOVE cardio, I could walk 6-8 miles a day if I had the time but apparently my body has become used to my exercise even though I have increased it greatly... I am going to watch a few videos and have some one on one training with a friend.
I was disappointed in myself, I retreated inward and started working out even more... which ultimately didn't help, I even gained a half a pound. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but if you knew how many calories I ate and how many I expended, you might understand why I was frustrated. It was only yesterday that I realized going inward and exercising insanely wasn't helping, I needed to ask for help from people that I know are successful. I have talked about strength training for the past few years, putting in a tiny attempt here and there and coming up with excuse after excuse... I want those excuses gone now... I remember when I first started walking, it was NOT easy but I worked at it...

I have to do the same thing with getting stronger physically because as the saying goes, 'Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results' (Albert Einstein). My body is great at holding on to weight it thinks it needs... I have to retrain my body in other ways. I also need to say something here, I do not have any desire to be really skinny, slender or small... that isn't me, I love my curves, I am very happy with my body shape, I just know for me to be healthier that I should lose some more of the weight.
Also, like I alluded to earlier, being healthy is not just losing weight and eating healthy... for me it is coming to terms with things in my life that are affecting how I feel. I honestly know what happiness is and how it feels, I have had that in many times in my life... and I was happy even when things were difficult... I know that happiness comes from within... I have not felt that for nearly 2 years, I want to feel happy again... so I am going to make many changes in the next few months, which of course I will talk about as I work on each goal.

Something that I honestly learned over the last few years is that until I am ready to make real changes in my life, I will have excuses for each of them... The real change comes for me when I confront each excuse and realize they were just fears... fears that I might fail... I might fail but I will never quit trying... one day I will succeed...

  1. Launna, you are working very hard. I wonder if some of the weight can be attributed to gaining muscle mass? Do you have a scale that breaks it down? Also, I'm sure you're aware of this but hydration is key to losing weight.
I have no doubt you can reach your goals. You are one of the most focused people I know.

  6. It's so frustrating when you eat properly & do sports, & not a single gramm leaves your body. You might want to google HIIT = High-Intensity Intervall Training... it works, I just can not do it because with my hips I can't ride a stationary bike or run as fast as I need to, to make HIIT work.

And don't forget... better no weight lost, than weight gained. ;)

  7. Thank you for such an inspirational post.
I hope that every thing is good with you and Valentina.
I agree it is better to not gain than to gain specially if you are trying to loose.
    Take care and God Bless.

  8. Dear Launna, I'm so happy you're back!! I hope you had all the time you needed to dive into your thoughts and emotions. As for the excercising/gaining weight issue, you're totally entitled to feel frustrated because it's about your own health, and apparently you're working hard to be healthy. I truly wish that you start getting better results with the upcoming changes in your routine. You deserve to get closer to your weight goals, which is not a superficial goal at all, as, I insit, we're talking about your own health.
    Have a lovely Sunday!

  9. It is best to know your body. Love your body..which makes me think of a song I heard recently by Haley Seinfeld ..about Loving Yourself. However, we evolve. Each day brings something new..emotionally..physically..(a friend of mine was riding her bike and got hit by a dog and hit her head on the cement and she is having so many difficulties now)but as they say..keep moving and embrace it. All the best on being YOU!

  17. So glad you reached out to people who know about what needs to happen for weight loss to occur. I have not tried strength training, but I have heard it is the key to build muscle that will continue to burn more calories than fat will throughout the day. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey. You are such an inspiration and I am glad you are sharing your challenges with us- we all have them and it helps to hear about what others are facing.

Missed reading your blog- so I am happy to see this post. :)

it happened the same to me years ago when I lost 16 kilograms in a year. Our body tries to resist the daily exercise because it feels it like an external attack. What you have to do is to ignore it and go on walking every day. After some time you'll be losing a lot of weight.
In half an hour I'll be doing some Pilates for my back :)

I have been trying to put on more mustle for a very long time, and yes I have so many excuses as to why I haven't gotten there yet. I need to work at it, and with such a busy working mom life it is a challenge. It's a challenge that I am going to conquer by the end of this year. Seriously! Also, I have learned from reading so many fitness blogs and articles, that you must use weights to actually start seeying better results as far as fitness goes. By the way I was addicted to the show The Biggest Looser for a long time, and it was mentioned there! Wish you all the willl and power, we can do this Launna, you are not alone in your battle!

  44. oh, I know how frustrating this can be. I'm trying to change eating and workout routines for different reasons [health], and I can't see any results either. that said, I stopped focusing on results and numbers. I'd like to get rid of however much weight i put on since coming back from Malaysia [I know I don't need to] but I don't even know how much that is because I don't use a scale. and I refuse to try to put the rest into numbers [I'm vague, I know, but it's nothing I can discuss publicly] just because I know it would frustrate and discourage me too. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say with this other than 'I hear you' and 'Keep going' and 'F*** the numbers' and 'Be yourself' xoxo

Discipline is very important but feeling disappoint about yourself is not good: if you find an error on your doing, think that you were focused enough to find it! And then start to search a solution!
But never have negative thoughts about youself, these are ueseless and demotivating!

  57. I know what you mean and I don't think I am nearly as disciplined as you. I think of walking as having a healthy heart, a better than nothing exercise. I love it too when the weather is right but honestly even though I've burned some calories and I am keeping my legs toned, I don't feel I've worked out unless I've exercised at the gym, at home or I've ridden my bike. I do think our bodies are thanking us for taking a walk and getting some natural vitamin D but when you're really trying to make a difference you've got to have a full body workout regimen. I know - that thought sucks. :-/ That's aside your 9 lbs is awesome!!!

  58. I can be so discouraging when the scales don’t move or only move slowly. Even if we know intellectually that we are not defined by that number. I am seriously in awe of your perseverance and how you are reaching out for advice from those who’ve been there and done it. That is very smart. I heard that a slight increase (yes, more!) in your calories and a change-up of your exercise routine can get things moving more quickly again. I am excited to hear more about the changes you are wanting to make over the next few months! I think you’re doing great and your attitude is very inspiring. And happiness will be there again for you, I can feel it :) xo

Yea, just use that coupon code on my blog! Also, I have a Gurus giveaway coming up later this week- so you can even try to win an extra pair! -- And regarding your post, YES. I totally know what you mean. I think that being happy with our bodies and knowing what size/eating habits we need to FEEL rejuvenated and healthy and full of energy are not the same thing. I definitely feel better in general when I eat less and exercise more and have lower body fat and thus less curves. It's the putting time aside regularly that is my issue... and avoiding bored eating. We all have our temptations.

So I wish you wonderful and healthy week.
