Making Room For My New Life

We had a long weekend here in Canada, I was excited as I planned to sleep in a couple of the days... of course that didn't happen, however; I did get a lot of things done that I had on my list. I had a couple of ladies I know come to my home early this evening and we cleaned out my office, preparing for me to work from home in the near future. It is amazing how much stuff we hold on to... I found things I had not seen since I moved in here almost 8 years ago... I purged so much of it, it felt wonderful.  My motto is if I have not used it in the last 6 months, it is going.

I am working on that with Valentina too... she tends to hold onto stuff and it just clutters her room. I know many people will say to me it is her room and I just need to close the door... she will learn to pick up after herself. Unfortunately that is not how it works with her, her room gets out of control and then she tends to leave it in many parts of the house. She went swimming today with a friend and she needed her lock, we had to go through all the bags she has and we found it with many of the other items she was missing...  I told her that her room is next on the list and that she really needs to think about what is important.
Frankly if it is important, you will take care of it, you will know were it is... it will not be at the bottom of closet or in a bag with garbage in it... When I decided that working from home is very important to me, I knew I had to do whatever possible to make it happen. At first I believed it was moving to a new place but once I found out that Valentina will be needing braces for a few years I had to rethink what I actually needed. I still wanted to work from home and a way was suggested, I decided then and there to make it happen, not wait until I was given the green light...

I think waiting would have meant stressing myself out at the last minute... I have become comfortable with my bed in the living room and by staying here, I have been forced to rid my house of unnecessary items... so I realized I never had to move, I had to change my thought patterns thinking that I needed more. Having more wouldn't have made me happy... Can you imagine if I had found the place, moved in and then found out about Valentina's teeth?... everything happens for a reason.  I needed to see that I had enough... more than enough.
I'm content with where I am right now, I can see that it will be much less stress that I stay here... it is close to the grocery store, the dentist, the beautiful walking trail, major malls... I am able to walk to many of these places. I am looking forward to making it happen as soon as possible... Hopefully before the summer is over, I don't want to travel another winter and I want to be home for Valentina... sometimes we need to make concessions to have what we really need...

I remember reading many years ago that if you want something in your life, you need to make room for it... that is why I decided to get prepared for this change in my life... This made me think about how I have cluttered other parts of my life so that I don't have room for change... It is time for me really think about what is important and what I can and cannot live with out, only then I will be able to make the room for what I really need in my life.

  6. Don't you feel like you just took a huge, important step forward into your future? I am so happy for you. Sometimes our dreams come true in small, unexpected ways-ways we would never have wanted to claim in the beginning.
Who would have thought that you would be comfortable with your bed in your living room and to be letting go of things you thought you had to have (even if you haven't seen them in years)...lol
I am doing the same thing-purging as we prepare to downsize. "collections" that have had for years are going to be the choice collection of another as I release them.
Sounds like you are in the perfect spot for the time being; that you are close enough to places that you need to be close to but also a place you can claim as your office/workplace as your plans progress.
I am happy for you, Launna. You've come a long way, baby! (old motto from the 70s)...lol xo Diana

  12. It's good to get rid of the things we don't use.I totally agree with you in cleaning the room of your daughter also, after all a parent only can guide a kid better. You would be surprised to know that here in India, parents are involved in almost very decision of their kid ( of course now with modern times things are changing a bit) but still we always look up to our parents for their decision or approval of our decision. It is kind of reassuring also that we are doing the right things if our parents approve our decisions.

  16. Wow, Launna! It's not so long before you get to work from your home office. And I always relate so much to you! If I've not used it in 4-6 months, then of course it's going! This decluttering trick really helps to clean the mess soon. But guess what, I've SO many things piled up here that I almost get frustrated wondering where to start.

Best of luck! I wish you lots of happiness! <3

  17. Ahhh, decluttering... feels SO good!! I think it's great you are prioritizing working on better habits of organization with your daughter. Closing the door is not good advice, well, IMO it's not... ha! Does Valentina know Alena?? Cause Alena seems to leave things around the house, too (socks, stuffed animals, toys... just whatever...) you can always tell where she's been. I've been trying to get better about having her come and pick up after herself, but sometimes I forget and quickly put stuff away for her. And I'm like, that's not helping her to learn to be a neat and organized person...

    Have a good Wednesday lady!

  18. This is a great post, Launna. It is exciting for you to be making these changes to make room for what's important in your life and to realize at the same time that there are other things you can let go of. I need to start going through our things and doing the same thing. I hope you have a great weekend!

  19. I'm very happy to hear you so positive and confident about your actions and the future, Launna!
This is definitely the right attitude to get beautiful things!
And I totally agree with you: everything happens for a reason and it's up to us making this a positive or negative thing!
And don't worry too much for Valentina holding & cluttering, I was like her (and I'm still pretty like this), I've wanted hold a lot of things maybe just because they remember me a moment or an event and in my mind these things are something like precius memories, but with time I started to change my mind and looking for a more clear and tidy space.
Now my room is way cleaner than many years ago (but still not my wardrobe ^^)! So don't worry too much, giving her right advices and with a bit of patience she'll undestand on her own! :)

  22. Hi dear Launna! I'm sorry for not having visited your blog in the past few days, I was busy doing stuff becasue I had a getaway from Saturday to Tuesday morning.
I'm happy to be back and find such a beautiful lesson shared here. I agree on the importance of getting rid of things we no longer use or need, and that applies to material things and also feeling. I should learn to declutter more in my life and like you, maing room for new things: people, adventures, objects... Thanks for reminding us all how necessary is that, Launna! :)

  25. I'm so happy for the two of you. You are being a wonderful role model to Valentina..too..saying this..I'm a lot like Valentina...when it comes to my room. I'm glad you brought up emotional clutter, as well. It worries me that I've been bogged down from all those mettling reasons of doing so many things in your life that others just know would make you happy..and then you do these certain things in your mind set to make them happy. Oh what a vicious cycle it becomes.

Wishing all the best for you. Very inspiring post!

  28. How when you want something, you gotta make room for it is really so apt literally and figuratively for you in this post, Launna! What a nice quote.

I'm so proud of you for tidying up your place and being able to throw so many things away. I'm a very sentimental person and I tend to keep all the little notes and letters from the past (even from school!) but I don't even read them any more! The description of how Valentina is like is so funny. I know how exasperating it is to be untidy and not able to find things.

I'm going to move out into a condo with my hub soon. We have been staying with his family for years. ANd I'm very excited coz my room is getting more and more cluttered, I cannot find things and it makes me very agitated and exasperated at times when I can't find things or when things start to topple from the lack of space. Have you heard of this book? http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22318578-the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-up
I think I need to read this before I move out. I still have got half of my stuff in my family home and I need to empty that room too.

All the best in your work working from home!

  29. So glad you are content with where you are right now, Launna. That's the best and most happiest thing we can strive for I think, to be happy and content with our lives. So many aren't and I know you were in a bad place, so I'm glad you have turned that around.

I'm probably the same as Valentina, I tend to keep a lot of things and hold onto them so I have too many things in my room, but I can't part with most of them as they all mean something to me.

When I emptied out our big home and got rid of all the stuff of decades, I felt lighter and freer with every trip to the dump or the second-hand store. It's wonderful to finally take charge of one's space in this way.

  57. This is wonderful. Having a sort out has so many benefits beyond just a cleaner house. I agree if something is important enough you'll know where it is. Reminds me of one of my main beliefs in life which is that if someone is important enough to you you'll make time for them (often frustrated by people's excuses of being too busy). I definitely thinking the time in which we realise something is for a reason too.
