I Choose Me

I have had a pretty busy week, I am trying to get my walking in daily...  it's a challenge but I am trying to push through until it is easier. My past experience proves that it will be easier and more enjoyable with time. It's still a bit too chilly here and frankly I can't wait until I don't have to wear so many layers.  Also, I know for me that I need to have accountability for being healthy, it is much too simple to give into my weaknesses if I don't have to be accountable to myself.

I don't want my life to be all about what I eat and how much exercise I do but for a little while that is what I need... saying this I need balance in all aspects of becoming healthy. I have lost my way and have used any and all excuses to do as I pleased... I don't want to say I need to get on track but I do need to become focused. I believe we have to choose ourselves... often we put ourselves on the back burner and when we do, we essentially are choosing others... I am all for serving one another but I also know that if we don't choose to take care of ourselves, we have nothing to give to others.
Things are coming together for me with being able to work from home, I had been looking for a place to live but that idea had to be put away for a few years due to the fact that my Valentina is going to need braces. I was despondent thinking about still having to travel back and forth to work for many years to come but... one of the people I follow through a blog helped me come up with a solution... This may not work for everyone but I am giving up my bedroom to use as my dedicated office and I will be separating my large living room into two sections and have my bed at one end.

I am totally excited about how this solves my travel issues. I have spoken with my team leader... it's not something that can happen tomorrow but it is in the works. I have people coming to my home this week to help me declutter and organize so that I will be ready when the opportunity comes about.  Part of the problem with throwing things out here is that we have limitations of what and how much we can discard every two weeks. Thankfully one of the ladies coming is going to take many of the bags to the dumpster for me... I am so happy about this... I know that if I have others helping me I am going to be more motivated.
I have put myself on the back burner for far too long, when I injured myself I gave myself permission to be do and eat what I wanted... and if I am being totally honest I was already giving up on myself before I was hurt... I felt like if I could continue to exercise that I could do as I please otherwise... I now know getting hurt was my wake up call, I needed to see that I was over using exercise to keep my excuses that I had given up on me.

I need to choose me again, I did that a few years ago when I focused on becoming healthy in all ways. As much as exercise is important in my life, I don't need to do it to excess... As I wrote before I had some challenges that I wasn't dealing with in the way I should, instead I walked a great deal... I didn't want to look at it, it was so much easier to just go out and exercise it off... After talking with my physio therapist at great length, she explained that I was probably injured and that I ignored it and then really did damage that made me stop... Challenges come into our lives to wake us up... I decided that I needed to go back to basics and choose me...

  4. Its always you!! You are the most important person in your life! Why? Only when you are fine, healthy and strong, Valentina can be as well. Its what you teach her and Im pretty sure that you is recognizing your strength!!! Never forget who you are or where you come from its part of your life, history and future! Im happy to hear that you found a solution that works for you!! To separate the room sounds great!! Really think that could work out.

Hope you can take off you layers soon and that the weather will be warm enough to walk outside in shorts and shirts!!

1000 hugs from your traveling friend :)

  6. There's nothing wrong in taking a step back to reflect, to improve oneself and to continue to dream of a healthy life, and actually work toward achieving that goal. Life is all about growth and replenishment, of the body, mind and soul.
Greetings to you and best wishes!

  7. Such a hard thing to do sometimes- choose to put ourselves and our needs first. I have a horrible time doing that. For me, I have always felt some guilt at the 'selfishness' of putting myself first---at least that is the way I felt (sometimes still feel). Why do we do that to ourselves?

Good luck to you. I am starting to purge my house, too, in anticipation of a move in the future to downsize. There is something scary about letting some things go for me. For years I 'collected' this or that and maybe, in some way, it defined me....and now I need to let those 'things' go. And- that is what they are---just things.

God bless you, Launna. I pray for you all the time. I hope the work-from-home thing works out for you. You will not regret putting your move on hold so that you can have braces for your Valentina. When she smiles at you many years down the road and you see her beautiful, straight teeth and she is not embarrassed to smile freely at everyone, you will thank yourself for being patient about the move. lol

Have a wonderful week full of good nutrition, proper exercise, job success and life at home. xoDiana

  15. Your plans and how things are progressing sound so good and you sound so positive, which is just great.

Life is about balance, and sometimes it is so hard to find this balance, we can be pulled this way and that! Staying focused can and does help.

I think you could be in for an excellent few months ahead ... and beyond!
    Exciting times for sure.

Good wishes to you and Valentina

  17. Launna,

I'd been waiting for your new post! I'd check your space everyday hoping for a new post and I'm glad I got to read one today! Your posts are so motivating. In each and every post, somewhere I'm able to relate myself. Your words are magic, really!

And you're so true in your words! - We need to live for ourselves. Sometimes, I feel lost in the middle where I just break the routine and do sacrifices for others, only to realize later that I'd paid less-to-no attention to myself.. my health and my life! It happens very often! For an example, I'm badly underweight now and I know it's unhealthy for me. I stand at 97 pounds and I'm tall. I've been trying to pack on some pounds. But before I could fix on a proper diet routine, I get this and that to do! Then I end up starving myself for the work I do for others. I need to take care of my family members; I cook three meals a day and amidst of all this, it's almost getting impossible for me to take care of my work! Nevertheless, I'm still trying my best!

Thankfully, my home is my workplace too, which is a good thing! It's so great to know that you're creating an office space inside your house. I hope that's going to help you a lot! It will spare you a lot of time for yourself. Even I'm thinking to create an office space inside my house, but instead of splitting my bed room (which is already small) I'm thinking to split my living room into two and make one the office space. Did you give this a thought?

My best wishes for you! Please do take care of your health!

Nothing is more important than that! :)

  23. You're so right. Sometiems we can over-exercise or use exercise to push some issues way...There is a right way and a wrong way to approach physical activity and I myself have chosen the wrong way more than a few times! exercise should make us feel better, it should make us healthier and it should never be stressful or too much. I hope your injury is alright now. I hope that you will find a walking pace that works best for you. Eating healthy is important too, but that is something that can also be taken too far. As you said, it is all about finding balance!

good luck with your home office project!

  24. Oh, glad you're going to be able to work from home and love that you're making all these changes in your personal space- nothing gets me as light as decluttering!!!! I feel sooo happy when I can take a step back and look at all the space and solution I've been able to come up with, Lol.
Maybe it's because my husband is a bit of a hoarder and I, on the other hand, have always been a minimalist so I'm always happy to throw out stuff he's brought in! Lol.

  35. I’m excited about your decluttering and moving around stuff to dedicate your room as an office. In the long run it’ll work out better than cramming your office into living room space where you wouldn’t be able to concentrate.

Ouch to the damage that eventually made you stop! I have walked with a pain in my knee or hip hoping to “walk out the kinks” and of course that doesn’t always work then I have to take a day or two off.

  36. You make a very valid and important point about if you fail to take care of yourself, then you can't care for others either. It's SO important to take time out for you!!!

  37. Launna I'm so glad to hear you're putting yourself first, and turning your dream of working from home into a reality, by taking definite practical steps and accepting the support of others. What you said is very true. If we neglect ourselves, how can we be expected to be helpful to others? Self-care is a must, and enables us to be more helpful to others.

I hope you have a lovely week.

That is exciting and it is awesome to get to take steps in the right direction. :) I am so happy you are putting yourself first. Thanks for sharing! Have a great week!

  39. Oh that's a really good idea to turn your room into an office! Will you be able to sleep ok in the living area room? Hopefully you can! But that's a great idea for being able to work from home.

Don't be too hard on yourself though Launna, we all go off track, I do and I still am off track at the moment with my food as I can't break the cravings I keep getting. As long as we notice the things we're doing and try our best to avoid them and take care of ourselves, I think that's half the battle. But I am glad you are doing better!

  43. This is something I really don't think about that much because there's so much go, go, go about life. However, I had similar thoughts after the car accident. My back and neck are still a mess and many of the normal activities are a no go. I'll probably never play tennis again based on my injuries. Still, it's the little victories, right? Sleeping without pain. Walking a greater distance than before. Sitting at the computer for more than a hour without being miserable... And it all gives me excuses to lay down and read--even if the kids need something. There are definitely seasons when our care is what matters.

  44. Hi launna.. thats right balancing is key for healthy. Eventhought is not easy to do all, we must do the priority and choose what we want to be. I do, how can we take care others if we dont care about our self first. I am happy for you. yups to know there some one beside us give us more motivate. Keep healty dear

  45. Many years ago I read the book "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand. While I don't agree with all of her ideas it really helped me. You do have to put yourself first sometimes so that you can be everything you need to be for everyone else. So glad you are walking again. HUGS!

  47. Good for you and for reaching to that conclusion, Launna. You seem to be facing some unexpected changes in your life and holding on to the idea of making you a priority is a good call. As you said, choosing yourself doesn't mean that you won't simply care about anyone else. It means recognising your true value, and that's not slefish at all.
I feel happy for you and for the positive tone of this post. Keep up that way, my friend!
