Overcoming Self Sabotage

It took me a bit to find the time to blog this last week, I have been thinking about some things I need to change... also I needed to give an update of my weight loss journey.  The last week and a half has been awful food wise, I did start to exercise daily, that felt great... I only walked about 6 miles but that is 6 miles more than I did the week before.

Anyhow, the food thing bothered me, I have had incredible control over what I ate in the past year and the last little while it was like I had given into food again. So I took a very hard look at myself and asked myself questions, why was I sabotaging all my hard work? I thought about it for a few days and I realized I was a little afraid of succeeding.  I know, silly right?  However; losing the weight has brought up a few things.

What I ended up telling myself is that I worked very hard for the last year of my life and I am not going to let a little rejection push me back to food again.  I have decided that when or if it happens in the future that I am going to find another way to deal with it. Something changed with me immediately, like a light flicked on , I started walking more and I am eating within my calorie limit... I feel good.  I am making the decision now to do this tomorrow and the next day.
The hardest part of getting over the addiction or issues we all have is getting past the disappointment we feel with ourselves for failing from time to time.  The successful person and I plan to be one of them, doesn't let anything have her wallow for any length of time.  Frankly if I can handle losing 'him' as my best friend yet continue to lose weight and get myself healthy, I can find another way to handle the let downs that happen in life. I am not going to let disappointment in myself allow me to fail, this is a life time goal.

I am grateful that I asked myself that question and that I really took the time to think about it. I've chosen to give myself that break that I am more than willing to give to other people.  I feel like that day I first started last year, I was focused, I had a goal and nothing took my eye off it... I feel like that now.  I took my focus off the goal but I have it back.  It really is just making a decision and not letting anything get in the way... not even self sabotage.

  2. You are one of the strongest people around. We all get off track sometimes, but I knew you would get right back to your goals. I am going to follow your lead and get back to exercising consistently. Thanks for being such an encouragement to me!

  4. Sometimes, I do wonder if we go off the wagon is because we don't want to feel good. But once you show your self when you are eating right and exercising..that feeling of strength comes back and we have to keep remembering how good that did make us feel. I used to think winter was the worst, but really I was definitely making myself exercise at least 30 minutes at day. Now that its so hot and humid...I don't want to do anything.

All the best on your challenge. I know you can do it. .. =)

  5. My wonderful Launna! No, thank you for inspired me! I hardly find time to work out since I have my twins. I'd every now and again but cannot keep it continue like how I used to do. But when I read your posts since last year even, as my twins are a bit big boys. I've decided to get back to my used to be routines. If my boys wont walk with me then I do jogging myself but if the boys want to go for walk with me, then we all walks. I used to enjoy to do and I will always do !!!! I was wondering , if you were busy with your exercising last week:). and I am glad you are okay:). Everything is going to be so fine with you Launna, I really mean it, you can handle it all:). You've so much of a good power inside you:). Bring it out of you:) and use them all:).

Good night from me to you:). Kisses.

  6. 6 miles is always better than no mile or metre! I always tell myself afterwards if I didn't go fully through my program in the morning, that I at least did sport at all.
Ah, self sabotage... Human Nature how we hate you sometimes. :)

  8. Launna, maybe you are being to hard with yourself. Changing habits is very difficult and you have done a hard work. Whenever I'm stressed or anxious, I go running and it instantly soothes me. Exercise is the best antidote against worries and anxieties. Well, at least for me. We'll be in touch!

  13. I feel you, Launna. I don't have weight issues and I'm not on a diet, but I do try to lead a healthy lifestyle and eat as healthily as I can. And most of the time I succeed. But then there are times when I lose self control and where I'll eat so much junk and 'undo' all my good behavior. I know it won't show up on the scales. But I also know that it's not healthy to eat a whole box of chocolates in one sitting and then add a few sugary cocktails to the mix. I can only imagine the damage that does on the inside. So what I do is I just try to remember that feeling of guilt and regret for next time I feel like giving in. It doesn't always work and sometimes I'm weak and cave. But for the past couple of weeks I've been a good girl, leaving the junk untouched :-)

Self-control is not always on our side. But I know you have a strong will power. I believe in you. You can overcome any obstacle :)

  37. Maybe we are afraid of success! But I will say I think we fall of the wagon because staying on the wagon is HARD. Food tastes good...resisting it requires willpower. Exercise is hard work, too. Of course, we know we feel better when we're eating well and exercising, but in the moment, that chocolate sure is appealing...

  38. I am so happy to be able to respond to your post, Launna! I think you hit the nail on the head here. I think we are sometimes afraid of success...that, and change! It is fine to eat chocolate on occasion, especially the dark one, as it is healthy, but I think we all have moments of weakness and it is good to be able to forgive ourselves and move foreward. Great post, Launna. I am rooting for you, and sending you a warm hug. :)

One of the things that derails me is how long it takes to lose...which tell me I am not thinking life style change to bring about results. 62. I wish I had your commitment and motivation. I have been eating out of control since last fall and am unable to stop. It sucks. I've gained more weight…..But I feel like I am hungry 24/7. I'm exercising a lot but eating way too much. Sugar and pasta is my downfall. Ugh….

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love this post. I have found with this process for me that I will go along and feel totally in control of my eating, and then like you I seem to hit a block and there is not enough food to satisfy me. But what I have realized is that each of those times, if I remain open, I learn more about myself and I move forward to even a higher level when it comes to the food in self-care. Anyway, I absolutely love this post, and I relate so much to it.
