Change Becomes Easier With Support

I have been contemplating if change is as easy as some people say, I know that there have been times in my life where one minute I was living my life one way and then within a moment I changed and never looked back. Other times I want to flip that switch inside, only I fail over and over. I question myself as to what the difference is between my successes and my failures. For me, I think I succeed when I am no longer afraid of failure and I believe in myself.

I have been trying to get back on track food wise and failing miserably... I wake up with good intentions and before I know it I fail. Part of me believes I cannot have success without cardio exercise and at the moment it just isn't possible. I have to come to terms with that, I need to take a step in the right direction and have confidence in myself again.  I achieved a goal I had long ago thought wasn't possible, I did it in a moment and for very long time I didn't look back... not until I injured myself and this is where I allowed failure into my life.
When I was injured, the switch I had turned on a couple of years ago was turned off, depression took over my thoughts and mind... the more pain I had the more I turned to food. The sad truth is that I am in more pain because of the weight gain...  it was difficult to exercise right after I was hurt... I lost sight of my long term goals. I gave into the short term injuries... and caused them to be worse... Sadly, I believe we all do this to a degree in our lives.

Why?  Excuses, fear, rationalization, doubt and feelings of inadequacy... Regardless of the story we tell ourselves, we either live with those choices we made or make a decision to choose better and do the work needed. Change can be easy when we commit with our whole heart, otherwise, change is difficult... but always possible. . .
As scary as it sounds and feels, the power to change anything is within us... the only thing stopping us is ourselves. Do I like admitting that to myself? No, it is easier to put the blame on other people and outside forces, however; I also know until I decide to do this for myself, I will not move forward with my health. The older that I become, the more I understand that without my health, I really don't have much.

So, I am open to ideas from everyone, I need to think outside the box... I would love to get motivated again. If I could get started with simple yoga and easy strength training ... I think it could get me started down the right path of becoming healthy again. If anyone has YouTube sites or websites that they find helpful, could you leave the links in the comments. I feel a little overwhelmed when I do searches as usually I find sites that are too complex, which means I don't stay with it. Also, maybe a group I can check in daily with to keep me accountable. Change becomes easier with support...

  1. Firstly, I totally agree with you, Launna! Change is not easy, but we have it within ourselves to do so, we just need to believe, to want to, and to move towards the change. Personally, yoga is too high impact for me, but I would like to begin Tai chi. I saw a few videos and am very intrigued by it. Perhaps joining a bowling league might be an idea? Just offering up some suggestions, as I really don't know what you like or would be interested in doing, but for myself, long walks in nature has always been therapeutic not only for my physical health but also my mental health.

I cannot think of videos offhand, but if I come across any that I think could be helpful and/or inspiring, I will definitely give you the link. I used to bowl on a league and I did quite well. I used the duckpins, though, not the big balls. But the small balls were just right for my needs, and it did help me to get into a good workout, but in a fun and interactive way! And I enjoyed it as well.

Whatever you do, Launna, I am rooting for you! Much love and warm hugs to you. :)

  2. I think half the battle is admitting that we need to change. Once we get past that it's much easier to recognize what aspects of our lives needs changing. It's always helpful to have the support too.
Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year Launna.

  4. Once I saw in a book that a big research was made and it showed we are affected by people who surround us, if someone who is your friend doesn't have health habits, you have 50% of chance of not having health habits too. And more, if someone who is close to your friend doesn't have health habits, you have 15% of chance of not having health habits too, even if you never meet this person. This way, I think is not only about being supported, but also about having people willing to change with you. That is ok for you because you have me :B hahaha
Do you still feel pain? Did you do some physiotherapy?
As for me, since I'm sedentary, I'm trying to move in normal activities for the time being, I'm doing some heavy cleaning to have a more confortable back-to-college time and although I havent being doing for enought time to have quantitative results, I feel more health already!
Nowadays the trend are HIIT exercises, I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPpObC5PnwM that I'm willing to try too (although for me hiit is a little too much sometimes).

  8. You are so right, Launna. I finally chose a word for the year (something I have never done before) and it is ACCOMPLISH. I am bound determined to change my eating habits and have been planning for the last week to start tomorrow. I have been cleaning out the junk and will shop later today to bring in the good food I know I need. AND--when I am eating right I accomplish so much more- I am not sitting around stewing in the anger and angst of overeating/eating junk. WHY do we punish ourselves with the food? Truly, it is a vicious cycle that continues day after day. It's like if I screw up early in the day I give myself permission to continue because I am already OFF TRACK. A friend said the wisest thing to me. She said, "with your next bite you can be back ON TRACK"....SO true. Sugar is so addictive for me and calls my name-sometimes yelling- sometimes whispering- but always there until I let it go completely. I can't eat just a little bit of sugar. One piece of candy is too much and a whole box is not enough (if that makes sense). So, girlie, if this old broad can do it- I know you can, too. I am not going to exercise until I have lost about 20 pounds. Otherwise, it is too overwhelming to me to make all those changes at once and then I give up. That is what I did before and kept my weight off for many, many years. This last year with John's cancer I gave myself permission to 'eat' because I felt so out of control with everything else. Dumb move! Dumb!
So, today for me is a new day. You always inspire me with your honesty. It makes me more willing to be honest with myself and to be more open about it to others--like here on your blog.
Blessings to you. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday, Launna. xo Diana

  9. Oh..there are so many variables that keep us from changing. Just don't try to over do it. Take it easy. One day at a time. Of course, some days are better than others. They always say yoga helps..and someone told me..don't forget to take your shoes off.

I saw at the Whole Foods Groc. yesterday ..the lunch box. Only eat what you can fit into the box. Of course, they were showing lots of healthy veggies in the that box.

If you can manage to stay away from white stuff (sugar, potatoes, flour, bread) then you are probably on the right track.

All the best to living healthy!

  11. Hi Launna! I just wrote something on change today :-)
Change is constant but yes, every time we want to consciously change something about our life, we need support.
I remember when I was trying to lose weight, being surrounded by people who forced me to eat and drink with them and make merry, made it so difficult to stick to a diet...Now I know better.

I hope you get all the support you need and may the changes you bring to your life make your living experiences more meaningful and beautiful :-)

  12. My dear Launna, I remember when you injured yourself and I completely understood your frustration in that moment. You're human, I would've felt the same and I would've also asked life why everything has to be so complicated. I'm super happy that you're trying to be back with different exercises now. I wish I knew something about it, you know I have zero idea of workouts and stuff (that's why I always said how much I admired your determination to live a healthier life). A few posts ago you mentioned swimming lessons and I thought that was a good idea. Yoga and stretching can be great too. I really hope you find the right exercise for you. :) I know you can accomplish your goals again!

  13. I've read and seen a few videos recently on something called the 100 day challenge. I think the premise behind it is to decide on one important change to make and make it for 100 days. (For example to walk for half an hour every day or to avoid sugar or whatever change you think you need to make in order to reach your goal.) Even if it is one small change, if you really stick with it, the theory is that you will see changes in yourself after 100 days. The changes in you and in your life will then motivate you to continue with the changes in your activities, adding new ones or more difficult ones as you go. The idea is to start out with something small and doable and keep that promise to yourself for 100 days. I haven't tried it, but it seems like a possible plan. This is a video about a mother and daughter team who tried it and their results. https://www.elitereaders.com/mother-daughter-100-day-challenge-lose-weight/ I injured my knee about a year and a half ago, and I am still struggling with getting back to where I was before the injury, so I can understand what you are going through. Wishing you the best of luck.

  14. Gosh, Launna, you are so wise and courageous. Change, it is absolutely terrifying for some reason. The unknown, even though we know it is better than our present situation, we become comfortable and complacent as we are, and so change becomes daunting, terrifying, overwhelming. I support you in your changes, let me know if I can do or say anything at all to support you in making your changes. Here for you xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi Launna,

Such courageous words. I agree, change, while terrifying is a must too. All the best.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with you that change is easier with support. It is hard to believe that we are the ones that hold us back from achieving our dreams or goals, but a lot of the time it is true. I know I often rationalize why I can do "such and such" (eat badly, not exercise, etc.). Having a friend or group to check in with definitely helps me stay on track. Also, I find when I make small goals for myself I have an easier time sticking with them. Instead of no sweets, I say something like I can have one treat a day, which may help me not have 5 treats a day. :)

Wishing you the best of luck with your goals!

For me "notting impossible in this world" just try to do the best and let GOD help. GOD is not sleep and always help who belive in.

"change can be easy when we commit with our whole heart." I love this statemment. I belive what ever we do, the result will followed. Do it all out and get the best. Minimal if the result didn't like what we want or perseption, no regret in heart.

  22. Does your daughter want to go for walk with you or participate in Yoga/exercise classes? Or maybe a friend/neighbor? For a lot of people, having someone to exercise with is a big motivation. Another thought: Do you like being outside and hiking? If so, you might try looking to see if there is a hiking club in your area. My dad does that. He's seventy (although he doesn't look it). It's great exercise, you meet some really nice people, and you get to see a lot of new places.

  29. True. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy despite telling ourselves otherwise, and I'm super guilty of that right now. Sometimes so many things need to be changed or fixed that it can be overwhelming. I'm coming to the realization that I can only do what can be changed, including myself, and the rest has to come when it comes. It's not easy but it's real truth. So this year, I wake up every morning, look in the mirror, tell me I'm amazing and I can do this. I put a note on the fridge and a note on my office door to stay focused, and let's do this! You say so many things that touch our hearts and we appreciate you! Hugs...

  31. Well i know weather for you is a factor now with getting out. So I want to refer you to the walking videos again. Here's a free one: https://youtu.be/DYuw4f1c4xs?list=PL-sN5EzaKy6QCPYrhczwKx8-H8KvVBj9p This is so much more doable if you listen to your own music and basically just look at her for guidance and you set your own pace. I've also been playing around with aromatherapy. I have a diffuser. I made a mixture yesterday that really brightened me up to get my workout done. Also a good book to dive into a world that is not this one sure helps! I really really want to start reading again consistently, it makes me happy to read books.

  32. Just loved reading this post, Launna. The title, quotes and the powerful lines in between..everything is so interesting. Totally agree that, "change is difficult." Especially when we don't find the motivation behind the change or the shift from our comfort zone. But also remember certain decisions aren't that easy to accomplish...when you are busy, restless, and not that excited.

I would say start with small steps like; do things (other than usual exercise and yoga) that might excite you, or you would be more thrilled to do. Your readers love to hear your inspirational stories and journey. So try doing something different this time ..at least to find your motivation back!
Try connecting with your friend (s) who motivates you and find you an inspiration- to make things happen. And start sharing your stories here with us...We would love to read you- always.

  45. I think that what's scariest about changing is all (or at least for the major part) in our head, dear Launna.
I'm the kind of person who usually look at changes as a new adventure that in case i don't like, I can manage to change in some way, but I cannot say that changes often scare me: the trick I use in those cases is to jump into the new assets so fast to have no time no think too much about, and eventually fixing things in the way I like more!^^
I know this could sounds crazy but works for me: as you're into a new situation you have no more time to imagine problems and have to front the real challenges, so all the process is way less scariest and you can front everything much more relaxed and ready!
So, I'm sure you'll find your way to front everything in future, since you experienced so much and you've survived! You're a warrior right now, dear so you can get everything if you really wan! :)

  47. I really love being outdoors. so at least once a month my friend and I try to recruite a group of friends to do a hike. We like to discover new places to hike and enjoy the day with positive motivational women. On my own I have to be better about excercising more regularly, but I know what excercises I like and I create my own workouts. I do use Youtube, but I also like to use health magazines because I discover new routines and healthier eating habits. I really do believe that a healthy diet is key. I try to eat as healthy as possible, because I know what foods make me feel good and which ones make me feel like I'm dragging all day long. So I use mindfulness with eating as well. I know how the foods I put into my body will make me feel and make my choice in that manner. It really does help. Also buying more fruits and vegetables as apposed to processed goods is a big one. When I feel good on the inside, I tend to want to work out more, and have way more energy. Hope that helps Launna! Best of luck with your fitness goals.

  48. Happy New Year Launna and thank you so much for your sweet comment. I really think it is so eye-opening to talk about how stressful a physical injury can be mentally and emotionally (especially when it takes time to heal) and you can't feel how you want. I hope each day gets a little better and like you said, change can be so difficult but easier when you commit your whole heart. Also, I totally agree that yoga can be so helpful (I tried it a few times last year and really loved it) but it's overwhelming as a newbie too. Some of my favorite yoga and pilates videos on Youtube are Efit 30 - many are only 20-30 min so it's not too much. Hope this helps.

  49. i think we all differ from each other in handling such situations friend!
i agree most easy thing we do to turn off the switch and put blame on others .other is to start living in a box where every positive energy cannot reach to us though we listen lectures ,read books ,get loving and caring behavior from our loved ones but due to be inside the box doesn't allow anything to touch or convince our heart.
when my parents died some years back through sickness and misery i was away from them and i could not take care of them and i was not there to say good bye .It made me a person who looks alive but has no life within for long .this depression hold me strong from inside and i felt i am melting slowly and will disappear one day like vapor in air and worst about it is that i had start feeling that death is easy way to get away from this guilt .
it took me almost two years to realize that with such negative attitude i am hurting my husband and kids to great great extent and then started my journey back to my life .i started job as teacher so i can be more busy and exercise regularly ,yoga helped to compose my thoughts and turn them into positive .
now i feel better at least i try to make my family happy and try to look normal .
so no mater how hard we try sorrows take their time .
i believe that soon you will be fine and be out of your box because you are VERY STRONG PERSON that is what i can feel through your so captivating writing .
    Hugs!

  50. Hi Launna,

Thank you for writing honestly about the difficulties you've encountered while trying to embark on a healthier lifestyle.

I became much more health-conscious a few years ago and for me, it was a gradual process of changing things bit by bit. I never introduced lots of big changes at once, but did it slowly. However, the habits then worked long-term, and I felt motivated to keep going, after starting to see the benefits. I replaced regular cereals with porridge oats, and found lots of natural ways to make them tasty, by adding different combinations of fruit and nuts. As I've always had a sweet tooth, I replaced the things I liked eating with fruit and dates, and things that give me a natural sugar rush, and gradually I felt no need for added sugars.

I also made little excuses to walk, even if it was just a few short walks spread out across the day, and would take the stairs, rather than a lift. Any ways you can think of to get moving will make a difference, even if it's small activities at first. Also, make sure you get enough sleep, as sleep deprivation makes it harder to lose weight.

I hope these tips help, and wish you the best of luck in your journey!

    Lots of love Saba xx

Is everything fine there? Since a lot seem to have change with Trump in the power I am worried about USA friends...

  57. I think that eating healthy doesn't have to mean eating next to nothing or having a very restrict diet. Unless there is some serious health problem forcing us to follow a very restrict diet, there is no reason why we should have to eat in a very restricted way. I think most people who try to eat more healthy set the bar too high. They don't do sugar, oil, anything...and then it is too much for them. I think it is better to make gradual changes...for example, cut out on fried food. If you stop eating fried food you're already eating healthier....instead of fry food, you could eat only boiled and raw food or if you cook something in the oven don't use oil. That's something that is not too complicated but it can help...or just eat more vegetables.

Every body is different. A drastic change in our diet can be a shock to our organism. So, if you want to cut out on unhealthy food try eating healthy two days a week, then three, then four and so on. And don't feel too guilty about what you eat- off-course that eating healthy is important but we are so much more than what we ate and we shouldn't define who we are by the calories we consume.
